Virginia Beach, Va. – The Virginia Beach Fire Department honored a special captain who has been named this year’s Firefighter of the Year.
The ceremony was held at Kempsville High School and several other firefighters were recognized for their skills, bravery and dedication to serving the public and VBFD.
Captain Ray Irizarry was given the highest honor of the night. He was named the 2015 Firefighter of the year for his positive attitude and efforts toward making the Fire Department better.
Captain Irizarry has helped with many highly successful projects including the recruit academy and a high rise live burn exercise that was held in the Cavalier Hotel.
His colleagues raved about his performance.
“His persistence in dealing with the owners and management of the hotel ensured that we were able to have a successful training event. It was his leadership that made the training prove to be invaluable to the Virginia Beach Fire Department and provided an opportunity that our members may never have experienced otherwise”
It was also noted that the VBFD recruit academy has been producing its highest quality members due to the efforts of Irizarry.
Captain Irizarry’s hard work, passion for the job and good-natured sense of humor has left a powerful impact on many people.
He constantly goes above and beyond his duties and serves as an excellent example to other firefighters.
