Gas leak in Hampton causes problems

Posted

Hampton, Va.- A gas leak was reported to Hampton Division Fire and Rescue on Thursday.

Around 10 a.m., officials received a report about an outside natural gas leak on Fox Hill Road.

Construction crews accidentally severed a gas line to Syms Middle School. The students were not evacuated but were instead sheltered inside of the school. This decision was made by Fire Officials, Hampton Police and Hampton Schools.

Monitors detected no natural gas in the building, but officials continued to closely observe the school.

Only a few residents in the nearby Foxcroft Apartments were evacuated, and they were only displaced for a short time.

Fox Hill Road was shut down in both directions until the gas leak was secured by Virginia Natural Gas.

Now that the leak is secured, construction crews will remain on the scene to repair any damages to the pipeline and roadway.
