Community in Currituck County takes action for long-time business owner diagnosed with cancer

Currituck County, NC - One small idea mixed with a small town is getting tremendous results in Currituck County. The community is taking action for a long-time business owner recently diagnosed with cancer.

Kevin Spain, who has owned Kevin's Corner in Currituck County for 31 years, was diagnosed with ocular melanoma, cancer in the eye, just last week.

Since then, his employees and employees at his wife's kitchen next door took action to raise money for his medical bills. The fundraiser happened on the same day Kevin was having surgery to remove his eye in Philadelphia.

They held an event called Thirsty Thursday. Employees sold dozens of gallons of sweet tea. Then on Saturday, the community is getting together for a fundraiser and barbecue. Businesses and residents from the Outer Banks to Virginia  donated baskets that will be auctioned off.

While his father is in Philadelphia getting treatments, Kevin's son Dustin is running the store. He says the family is overwhelmed by the community's support.

"I'm at a loss for words," Dustin said as he tears filled his eyes. "Just from the love and the support from the community and my dad went in yesterday with high spirits. I mean, he was going to lose his eye and he called me up beforehand and was almost crying, I mean it was just incredible."

Dustin said Kevin's surgery went well. He will be back in town on Sunday.

The community has set up a fund for Kevin. If you'd like to take action for the family, they have set up a fund:
