Norfolk, Va. – A mechanical failure caused a 170-foot crane boom to fall on Wednesday.

The crane boom fell down around 11:00 a.m. on the Norfolk side of the new Midtown Tunnel.

The incident happened while crews were working on the Elizabeth River Tunnels project.

Officials say the failure occurred when the operator of the boom was lowering a load of 2×4’s and was about to place the materials on the ground against a wall.

There were no injuries and the incident is still under investigation.
