Accomack County, Va. – The body of a missing 80-year-old man with Alzheimer’s Disease was found Tuesday morning.
After receiving a call about a vehicle found in the Rappahanock River off of a dock in Fredericksburg, members of the Stafford Sheriff’s Office, Fredericksburg Fire & Rescue Department and units from the Stafford Fire & Rescue Department responded to the scene.
Divers from the Fredericksburg Fire & Rescue Department found Howard Shrieves, Jr.’s body alongside the vehicle.
The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond is working to determine the official cause of Shrieves’ death.
The Accomack County Sheriff’s Office received a report on November 19 around 10:00 p.m. that Howard Shrieves, Jr. was missing.
Officials say Shrieves was last known to be traveling to Pocomoke City, Maryland around 5 p.m. on November 19. Shrieves never arrived at his destination.
Shrieves was driving a 1999 black Ford Escort with the Virginia registration VKB2761. The car has damage to the passenger side front fender.
His cell phone was last tracked northeast of Fredericksburg, Virginia around 1:00 a.m. on November 20.
Authorities believe that Shrieves also traveled through James City County, Virginia during the evening of November 19 or the early morning hours of November 20.
Detectives are working to find out why Shrieves was in Fredericksburg and how the car ended up in the river.
