Hampton, Va. - A dog died and now six people are without a home after a fire destroyed an apartment in Hampton.

This occurred in the 100 bock of East Sewell Road.  The building is a 3-story house that has been converted into apartments. Three families lived there.

One woman was inside when the fire started. She says she smelled smoke, grabbed her three cats, ran out of the house and watched it burn.

Officials say there is very significant damage on all floors of the building.

The fire was put out around noon.

Investigators say there were no working smoke alarms in the home when the fire started.

They are still trying to determine what caused the fire.
