Kitty Hawk, NC- Here’s the good news if you live in or are planning to travel to Kitty Hawk.
Crews have reopened a section of NC 12/Beach Road to traffic between Kitty Hawk Road and Lillian Street.
Back in early October, the road had to be closed due to flooding and damage that was caused by Hurricane Joaquin and another storm system that blew through the area.
Crews started repairs on October 27th, to rebuild the damaged portion of NC 12 and to rebuild the dune using sandbags. They also installed new fencing.
The new dune connects to two other sandbag dunes. To the south, it connects to one that was built earlier in the summer and to the north, it connects to a dune 200 feet to the north that was constructed using sandbags from 2003/2004 after Hurricane Isabel.
Crews plan to plant the new dune system with sea grass starting next week.
Carolina Marine Structures will start to repair a dune alone NC 12 on Ocracoke Island that was also hit during the storms in October.
The work will begin this weekend.
Lane closures will be in place while crews move equipment in and out of the construction site. They are working to time these closures around the ferry’s schedule so that it will not impact traffic.
