Hampton, Va. – An armored truck traveling on I-64 in Hampton ran of the road and crashed Tuesday morning, spilling several bags of coins. The incident caused backups on both sides of the interstate for several hours.
According to Virginia State Police, the truck was traveling east around 8:10 a.m. when it ran off the road and hit the jersey wall near the I-664 overpass.
The truck rode up onto the cement barrier and continued for several feet before stopping.
Troopers say roughly a handful of bags of coins spilled out of the truck during the crash. All of the coins were recovered.
The driver, 23-year-old La’Kea J. Robertson of Smithfield, was not injured. He was charged with reckless driving.
Speed and weather conditions were factors in the crash, according to VSP.
