Last minute holiday shoppers hit area stores

Virginia Beach, Va.  - Holiday shoppers are in a race against the clock.

"Finally. It's the day before Christmas Eve and we are finally done," said Katie Collanna outside of the Pembroke Mall Target on Wednesday. "It feels so good to finally be done."

Collanna and her husband say they have been shopping since Black Friday, but still had some items on their list that needed to be checked off. They weren't the only ones. Hundreds of shoppers made their way to the Virginia Beach store, though some say they waited this long on purpose.

"I know that the weekend was just crazy at the mall and everywhere else so I avoided that like the plague and then took the last few hours off from work today to get this done," explained Mike Matthews.

In order to accommodate shoppers like Matthews, most big box stores in Hampton Roads have extended their hours and brought in more staff during the last week of the holiday shopping season. Though the one thing the stores aren't prepared to do is restock their shelves.

"This is the last of the Star Wars stuff so if anyone wants a Millennium Falcon they aren't going to get much more," said Matthews.
