Firefighters working during holidays to keep citizens safe

Posted

Virginia Beach, Va. - While many people are at home celebrating the holidays, there are some that are working around the clock tonight in order to keep our communities safe.

It may be Christmas Eve, but it's just another day at work for firefighters across Hampton Roads.

While firefighters wish they could be home with their families, they aren't completely missing out on the holidays because they are with their own extended family-- their brothers and sisters in the fire service.

The crew is completely fine with doing whatever they have to in order to keep everyone else safe this Christmas Eve.

"Today is not different than any other day for us. We are ready to respond to calls just like any other day," said firefighter Dustin Rice. It's his first Christmas Eve away from his family,  but he doesn't see missing the holiday as a sacrifice.

"If I can't be home with my family this is where I want to be," Rice said.

But even though they are on duty for 24 hours straight, Virginia Beach firefighters are finding ways to get in the holiday spirit.

"I'm here because this is the best job in the world. I love to service my community and this is the best way to do it," Rice said.
