Newport News, Va. - A man was shot while attempting to rob a MetroPCS on 731 J Clyde Morris Boulevard on Monday night.
A call about the robbery came in around 7:15 p.m.
Authorities say the suspect, an adult male with his face covered, was armed with a handgun.
A MetroPCS employee shot him during the attempted robbery.
"It's sad to say, but I think it's good that he had [the gun] to protect himself and his business," said Curtis George, who lives near the store. "You work hard everyday, you go to work to try and provide for your family and have decent stuff and property. The last thing you want is for someone to come in and try and take it from you that you worked hard for. "
Surveillance video from outside of the store during the incident was released on Tuesday afternoon.
The suspect was taken to a hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.
The same MetroPCS store was robbed last week, according to Newport News Police. Detectives are currently working to determine whether the suspect in last week's robbery is the same on that attempted to rob the store again on Monday night.
MetroPCS has released the following statement:
"Our understanding is that the independent dealer is working closely with local law enforcement as they move forward with their investigation into this incident. Any further comment would need to come from law enforcement.”
