Proposal to build fitness park at Oceanfront is voted down

Posted

Virginia Beach, Va. - Close to 100 people packed the city council chambers on Tuesday night for a vote on a proposed fitness park on the Oceanfront. In a 5-5 vote with one member abstaining, the vote failed.

The plan was to build an outdoor fitness park near 40th Street. The equipment would've been donated and would've been similar to a fitness park in Santa Monica California, according to Luke Hellier who proposed the idea.

Some neighbors said they wanted more time to review the idea. They expressed concerns over parking, lack of restrooms, and that they felt it would have a negative impact on the natural beach.

Councilwoman Shannon Kane abstained from the vote.
