Newport News, Va. - Hilton Elementary School will reopen on January 14.

The school was closed for all students and staff after crews found lead paint throughout the building.

School officials posted an alert on their website, saying crews who stripped paint to put down a new coat discovered the lead-based paint.

The school consulted with an industrial hygienist to clean it up and perform air quality tests.

"A professional crew completed a thorough cleaning of the building and environmental tests indicate the building is ready for the return of students and staff," the school's website said.

Cleanup started Monday night, but students and faculty were out of school until Wednesday.
