Newport News Police investigating drive-by shooting

Newport News, Va. – Police are investigating a drive-by shooting that happened on Roanoke Avenue on January 9.

Police received a call about the shooting just after 5 a.m.

Officers found a 23-year-old Newport News man with a gunshot wound to his back on 23rd Street. Medics took the victim to the hospital for treatment.

The victim says he was walking down Roanoke Avenue when a light colored vehicle drove up behind him and fired five or six shots.

The victim was hit in the back as the vehicle passed. He is not sure why anyone would try and shoot at him.

There is no suspect information in this shooting at this time, but police are hoping the public will recognize the suspect’s vehicle.
