Elbow Road back open after several closures due to ice

Chesapeake, Va. (WTKR) - Elbow Road in Chesapeake has re-opened to traffic after being closed Monday morning due to icy conditions.

The road runs through both Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.

Over the weekend, Virginia Beach Police urged drivers to stay away from Indian River Road south from Elbow Road to North Landing Road due to several cars sliding off the road.

They reported icy road conditions were a major problem in the area, but no injury accidents were reported.

Drew Lankford with Virginia Beach Public Works says crews treated the area several times and had to deal with refreezing issues, made more complicated by a lot of shade in the area with more trees.

"It’s one of those areas we have to constantly monitor. It helps somewhat that it was the weekend and wasn’t as traveled as it normally is during the week but it really is becoming a major artery between here and Chesapeake so it deserves a lot of attention," he told NewsChannel 3's Todd Corillo Monday.

On Friday, the area of Elbow Road and Indian River Road was shut-down after a traffic crash that knocked down a power pole.

A part of Virginia Beach's CIP includes changing Elbow Road into a four-lane divided highway from Indian River Road to Dam Neck Road at the amphitheater, approximately two and a half miles in length.

The project would also include replacing the existing Elbow Road Bridge.

However, the project is dependent on funding from VDOT, and currently funding for it does not exist in the current six year plan, according to a Virginia Beach Capital Project detail sheet.
