Humble, Texas – For the first time since 1982, the vehicle made famous in the 1980s trilogy Back to the Future, will be back in production.
The DeLorean hasn’t been made for about 35 years but the DeLorean Motor Company in Humble, Texas will be pumping out new cars very soon.
Until now, the company had been refurbishing existing DeLoreans that were shipped in from around the world.
Now the company will build about 300 replica 1982 DeLoreans under a low volume manufacturing bill approved by the federal government.
“It’s fantastic. It is a game-changer for us. We’ve been wanting this to happen,” DeLorean CEO Stephen Wynne said. “That was a green light to go back into production. That was prohibited. It was against the law to do it.”
Wynne tells KPRC2 in Houston that he hopes to go from building one a month to one a week.
Currently, you can buy a refurbished model for $45,000-$55,000. Wynne hopes to sell the new ones for under $100,000, depending on the engine.
“There’s no reason to change the appearance of the car,” he says.
The first new DeLorean should be rolling off the production line in early 2017.
