Portsmouth, Va. - A school bus driver was injured in a fight onboard their bus as it headed to Douglass Park Elementary School in Portsmouth on Monday.
The bus driver had stopped at Staunton and Watts Ave. to break up the fight when they were injured, according to Ari Durall from Portsmouth Public Schools.
NewsChannel 3 was told that two girls were fighting on the bus.
They say the bus driver, who is in his 60's, was trying to break it up when he received a shoulder injury.
"I don't know what they were fighting for, but it was unnecessary," says a parent.
The woman says her grandchildren arrived to school late on Monday morning because of the incident.
"My grandkids, they didn't actually get on the bus yet, so my grandkids and about four other kids were standing out there waiting," she says.
Police were called about the incident at 9 a.m. They were called out to Watts Avenue.
Police and paramedics arrived an hour later.
They took the driver to the hospital.
The school would not say what kind of disciplinary action will be taken against the two students involved.
Police say they filed a report and it will be provided to the school's resource officer. They say it's a matter that will be handled by the school.
