February 22 is National Margarita Day, but this day means more than just bar hopping.
It celebrates the contentious history of the drink.
The earliest story of the margarita is that the owner of a restaurant created the drink in 1938 to please a difficult customer who was allergic to hard alcohol, except for Tequila.
Another myth says a woman named Margarita created the drink at a Christmas party in 1948.
But according to the “complete book of spirits” the first U.S. importer of Jose Cuervo is accredited with the creation in 1945.
No matter who created the drink, today is the day of the Margaritas.
If you’re going to celebrate at a happy hour on this day, make sure you celebrate responsibly.
