NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A police officer accused of assaulting her husband has been arrested on domestic related charges.

On February 23 at around 8:45 p.m., police responded to a domestic situation in the 700 block of Macneil Drive. The situation was reported by a person who was not involved in the incident.

When police arrived, a 32-year-old man told police he got into a fight with his wife and that she physically assaulted him, damaged a number of his belongings and smashed the windows of a car he was using.

Officers spoke to the man’s wife, 30-year-old Laila Leticia Underwood, who said her husband physically assaulted her and made verbal threats to her. Police spoke to a family member who also lives in the residence.

Underwood was charged with one count of assault on a family member.

Laila Underwood has been a Newport News Officer since April 2008.  She obtained warrants charging her husband, Keven Underwood, with one charge of assault on a family member and use of profane/threatening language over a telephone.  The warrants allowed for Keven Underwood to be released on his signature.

On February 25 just after midnight, Laila Underwood was arrested at a home in the 300 block of St. Thomas Drive in Newport News for one count of felony destruction to property, related to the February 23 incident.

Laila Underwood has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of this case and the internal investigation.
