Virginia Beach, Va. – A 24-year-old Virginia Beach man was sentenced Wednesday to eight years in prison for his role in the April 2015 death of another man.
Michael Allen Casey was found guilty of Voluntary Manslaughter and Use of a Firearm during a three-day jury trial last November.
According to court documents, on April 26, 2015, Casey went to the home of a female friend in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach, went to a local bar with her, and then returned to her home.
During the evening, the woman began texting her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Jameel Simmons, asking him for money she believed he owed her and claiming that she thought she could be pregnant.
The woman reportedly told Simmons not to come over to her house, but he showed up anyway and began knocking on the windows and doors.
Casey eventually opened the door and began to fight with Simmons. Casey put a gun to Simmons’ chest and Simmons asked, “Are you going to shoot me, bro?”
Casey then shot Simmons in the abdomen and back before fleeing with the gun.
During an interview with investigators, Casey admitted to shooting Simmons but said it was in self-defense. There was no evidence that Simmons was armed, however.
