Norfolk, Va. – Nearly half of the residents displaced from The District apartments after a small fire Monday have been allowed to return home.
The residents, many college students at Old Dominion University, were displaced after a cooking fire triggered the water sprinkler system.
On Wednesday, the fire marshal cleared 49 units that were not damaged by the water, resulting in 88 residents being allowed to return.
The additional 90 residents will not be allowed to return until 49 apartments undergo restoration for water damage.
The District has put 70 of the displaced residents in nearby hotels and the additional 20 elected to stay with friends or family.
There is no word on how long the remaining residents will be displaced.
