Newport News, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation ( VDOT) and the city of Newport News are discussing the possibility of adding an exit from I-64 West just beyond Jefferson Avenue.

The project came into discussion due to heavy traffic exiting northbound Jefferson Avenue causing congestion on I-64.

The future exit would connect from the end of the collector/ distributor (CD) lanes along I-64 just past the current Jefferson Avenue exits and take drivers to Chatham Drive at Boykin Lane.  The ramp would be a grade and run between the gravel pit in the Newport News Marketplace shopping center and the Newport News Green Foundation storm water pond as Chatham Drive and Bland Boulevard.

The lane barrier would be extended to keep the exit separate from the main interstate lanes. The new exit will potentially reduce congestion along Jefferson by providing  a direct path for traffic going to Bland Boulevard and the nearby shopping centers.

VDOT and the City of Newport News are now working together to obtain the Federal Highway Administration’s approval of the concept and to identify funding for the project.
