Southampton County, Va. – One sleepy student caused a stir in Southampton County after falling asleep on a school bus.
According to the Southampton County Sheriff’s office, a 5-year-old child fell asleep on a school bus on the way to school and woke up two hours later with no one around.
A detective at the sheriff’s office told NewsChannel 3 the child was found by a school employee, wandering around a bus garage
The student was taken to school and the student’s parents were notified. However, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office, deputies were not called by the school.
The sheriff’s office said detectives and the Department of Social Services teamed up to investigate after they received an anonymous tip.
Deputies say they spoke with all parties involved, but decided not to press any criminal charges. They are not releasing the names of the juvenile or the bus driver because no criminal charges are being filed.
Sources close to the school tell NewsChannel 3 the incident caused school officials to remind bus drivers to check their buses thoroughly before they leave them unattended.
