VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A high-tech series of sensors across Virginia Beach could soon help predict flooding before it happens.

"What we would like to do is install flood sensors that will be able to alert the public if there's a potential for flooding in their area," Virginia Beach GIS Coordinator Rob Jessen told NewsChannel 3's Todd Corillo Monday.

Funding for the network of 50 sonar sensors in low lying areas is included in the city manager's proposed 2017 Capital Improvement Program.

The sensors would be spread out across Virginia Beach and would constantly feed information back to the city.

It could allow officials to get warned hours in advance of flooding, which in turn they could use to directly communicate with citizens over social media and the Alert Now system.
