HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton authorities are monitoring a spill at the Alcoa Howmet plant.
According to a city spokesperson, wastewater containing potassium hydroxide leaked from the plant into a nearby drainage ditch. The spill occurred Friday morning.
The city's public works division says there is no imminent danger, but they are warning people to avoid the drainage ditch in that area.
According to a city spokesperson, 10 - 11,000 gallons of wastewater may have left the plant. While much of that water was caught by storm water management systems Howmet has on site, some of the water overflowed into the drainage ditch.
Alcoa Howmet makes airfoils for gas turbines. They have a contractor on-site monitoring the spill.
A spokesperson from Alcoa Howmet sent NewsChannel 3 this statement about the incident:
"There was an accidental discharge at an Alcoa facility in Hampton, VA. The plant personnel took immediate action to contain it. There were no injuries and environmental testing today has confirmed that pH levels within the affected area are normal. We have notified federal, state and local authorities, and are working with the authorities as well as local and outside experts."
