A North Carolina school system may adopt a policy allowing high school students to carry pepper spray this fall.
The Salisbury Post reports that the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education adopted the policy in a work session earlier this week.
Chuck Hughes, a member of the board, said the use of sprays would be for defense, referencing HB2.
House Bill 2, or HB2, was signed by North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory on March 23. The bill prevents local governments from setting their own anti-discrimination rules and requires transgender individuals to use public bathrooms that match their birth gender, not the gender they identify with.
“Depending on how the courts rule on the bathroom issues, it may be a pretty valuable tool to have on the female students if they go to the bathroom, not knowing who may come in,” Hughes said, according to The Salisbury Post.
The board is now planning a second review on whether or not the defensive sprays will be allowed on school campuses.
The clause wouldn’t go into effect until published in the upcoming student handbook.
