VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – After receiving a federal grant of $400,000 from Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) as well as an additional $132,000 from the City of Virginia Beach, the Virginia Beach Correctional Center will be obtaining a new emergency generator. This 500 kilowatt generator will help power the facility in the event of an emergency such as a hurricane or power loss.
The grant was made possible by the 2015 Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant Program. The goal of this fund is to increase readiness for emergencies and reduce the risk involved in future disasters.
The new generator replaces a 25-year-old 300 kilowatt model the jail is currently using.
