The school system announced that Dr. Brian Matney was put on administrative leave on April 15.

He was officially reassigned as a program evaluation specialist in the Office of Research and Evaluation on May 11.

Dr. Cheryl Askew will be the new principal of Landstown High School, starting on July 1.

Askew currently serves as the principal of Ocean Lakes High School and will finish the school year there before transitioning to Landstown over the summer.

“This year, I was reflecting on my career here in Virginia Beach and I knew I was ready for a new challenge as a principal and school leader,” Askew said. “When the opportunity came available at Landstown, I knew working with a new, talented staff, a passionate student body as well as the Governor’s STEM and Technology Academy would be the ideal fit for me. I will cherish my years at Ocean Lakes but also look forward to the new relationships and work ahead at Landstown.”

Askew has worked for Virginia Beach City Public Schools for 31 years.

Landstown High School Acting Principal Jerry Deviney will remain at the school through the end of the school year.
