Memorial Day weekend: Pool Safety

Posted

Virginia beach, VA- It’s the unofficial kick off to the summer season: Memorial Day weekend.

With warmer temperatures on the way, many will celebrate by taking a first dip in pool.

With so many planning to flock to the pools, it’s important to remember to keep many safety tips in mind to avoid tragedies.

EMS officials want to remind parents to always keep an eye on children around the pool area.

Michael Lewis with Virginia Beach EMS says on holiday weekends especially, parents tend to get distracted.

“People just having a good time to be honest with you. You have a group of parents outside, they’re maybe having a barbecue or a party,” said Lewis.

Officials recommend parents having a designated supervisor for kids in and around the pool.

Some other tips:

  • Stay within arms reach of children
  • Keep children clear of drains and pipes
  • Learn CPR, a couple of seconds can make a difference when it comes to preventing a drowning

As people get ready to take that first dive in the pool, it’s also important to make sure your pool is ready for the season.

That includes getting you filter and pumps running, testing the water, and balancing chemicals.
