Armed man taken into custody after house fire, brief standoff in Currituck

GRANDY, N.C. – Everett Charles White was taken into custody after a brief standoff with Currituck County Sheriff’s deputies at the scene of a fire on Friday morning.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that a detective discovered a building on fire in the 5600 block of Caratoke Highway just before 9:15 a.m. and called Currituck Fire to respond.

Fire crews arrived and found that the fire had originated in a detached garage apartment and it was unknown if the occupant of that apartment was inside.

While the fire was being extinguished, a deputy discovered the armed occupant inside the primary residence on the property.

After a short standoff, the man walked out of the home unarmed and was taken into custody.

No one was injured. No shots were fired.

White is currently being held at the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office with a total bond of $76,000. He has been charged with second degree felony arson, felony breaking and entering, as well as the misdemeanors assault by pointing a gun and communicating threats.

His court appearance for communicating threats will be on June 27. White will appear in court for all other charges on June 1.
