WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary senior Josh Smith played the role of hero on Sunday when he hit a grand slam in the bottom of a tied eighth inning with two outs. Zach Pearson added an insurance RBI single in the inning as well to rally the Tribe (29-29) past the top-seeded UNC-Wilmington Seahawks 14-9.
The Tribe had forced a winner-take-all game earlier Sunday after a seven run ninth inning to tie the game and send it to extra innings. Cullen Large struck a leadoff home-run in the top of the 12th that would be the decisive run to force the championship game.
The Tribe will open up their tournament play Friday at 1 p.m. against UVA in Charlottesville.
