VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -  According to AAA, Memorial Day marked the start of the “100 Deadliest Days” for driving.

This is the time when teen crash deaths increase because more kids are driving during the summer.

According to AAA, recent research shows that more nearly 60 percent of teen crashes are due to distractions - and that texting and social media use are on the rise by teen drivers.

A report from the AAA Foundation and the University of Iowa found three trends that led to most of the crashes: talking or attending to other people in the car, texting or using a cellphone, and attending to something inside the car.

According to AAA, over the past five years, more than 5,000 people have been killed in crashes involving teen drivers during the “100 Deadliest Days”.

They stress that parents should talk to their kids about distracted driving, and the dangers of it.
