CHESAPEAKE, Va. - A Chesapeake woman said her car being broken into was a crime of opportunity. Bridget Pittman tells News 3 she's lived at Willow Points II for more than 10 years and nothing like this has happened to her until the lights were out.

"It's so pitch black dark out here when it gets night time you're scared to come outside. And it's giving the thieves opportunity to go to people's cars and steal," said Pittman.

The lights at Willow Point Condos have been out for more than a month, according to Pittman. People who live there say the problem is with the Homeowners Association, who are responsible for the lights.

"It was pitch black, dark, that's an opportunity to check to go and check the cars, see what you can find in there to steal," said Pittman.

Pittman said she has tried to get the HOA to fix the lights for a month, but with no luck. She's not the only one trying to get the lights back on.

Elaine Carter,  who has lived at Willow Point for four years said, "You leave at night, no lights. My husband has to walk me out."

Carter said her husband's car was broken into as well. Something she did not expect to happen in their neighborhood.

"I was surprised because this is a pretty quiet neighborhood. It's a pretty nice neighborhood, you don't have any problems. That was a shocking thing to see," said Carter.
