NORFOLK, Va. – The Chrysler Museum of Art’s new exhibit, Women and the Civil Rights Movement, will focus the role of African-American women during the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

The photographs show images of struggle and depict life in a segregated society. Famous and unknown women are remembered in this stirring photographs.

“This isn’t a who’s who or a timeline of the Civil Rights movement,” curator of the exhibition, Brock Curator of American Art Alex Mann, explains. “It’s a collection of magnificent photographs telling an inspiring story through different strategies. Some are portraits, carefully constructed, while others are street photographs, throwing us into the action, where we almost feel the heat and hear the protest songs.”

The Chrysler Museum of Art will be displaying the exhibit from June 14 through October 30, 2016. Admission to the museum and the exhibit is free.
