VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – In 2013 Governor McDonnell signed a bill into law that put CPR into schools. The bill, nicknamed after a student who died waiting for CPR, states, “-requirements for the standard and advanced diplomas shall include a requirement to be trained in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the use of automated external defibrillators, including hands-on practice of the skills necessary to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation.”
With a high number of cardiac arrests occurring at in places other than a hospital, the American Heart Association (AHA) believes it’s imperative that children and teens know lifesaving measures.
In honor of CPR Awareness Week (June 1 through 7), the AHA partnered with Sentara Heart in order to train more children in CPR.
