Virginia is celebrating the first annual Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week, June 4-12.
Keeping the Chesapeake Bay clean and restored is a constant struggle as it stretches about 200 miles. The bay is an estuary, a body of water in which salt and fresh water mix and it’s the largest estuary in the United States.
According to the Chesapeake Bay Program, the body of water is home to more than 3,600 species of plants and animals and hosts over 500,000 Canada geese in the winter.
Keeping this diverse ecosystem strong is one of the goals of Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week.
The Chesapeake Bay Commission is a policy leader in the restoration of the bay and they are launching a series of events in celebration of the first awareness week.
CBC member Senator Emmett W. Hanger, Jr., will join Shenandoah Valley agriculture leaders on June 8th at 2:00 p.m. to showcase a farm operation taking action to restore the Bay.
