NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Newport News police mistakenly identified a power bill scam targeting elderly residents on Tuesday.
In a press release from the department, a Dominion Virginia Power affiliate was working in southern section of the city when two men began knocking on doors. Police originally believed the men were scammers because they were driving in an unmarked car and were unable to provide identification.
“The men may have been employees of the company and were working to provide energy-saving materials or tips to homeowners,” said Jamie Bastas, a spokesperson for the department.
Police did contact Dominion Virginia Power prior to issuing the scam alert. A spokesperson issued this release:
“If you are uncertain whether someone claiming to be a Dominion employee actually works for the company, first request to see the employee’s photo identification card for verification. (All company employees carry a photo ID card.)”
Police are using the error however as an opportunity to remind citizen to use common sense if a contractor in your area is requesting goods or services.
“Ask for their identification, validate who they are with and if they are sub-contractors find out who they are contracting with and contact the company to verify,” said Bastas in a statement.
