Penguins top Sharks to win the Stanley Cup

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-1 on Sunday night to win the Stanley Cup. The Penguins won the series 4-2.

This is the Penguins’ fourth Stanley Cup, and their first since 2009.

Despite not scoring in the final game, Sidney Crosby was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player in the Stanley Cup playoffs. He finished the postseason with 19 points on six goals and 13 assists.

The final game’s first goal was scored by the Penguins on a power play with 11:44 remaining in the opening period.

San Jose gained started off the second period strong, with a few great saves from goaltender Martin Jones

San Jose scored with 13:33 left in the second to tie the game at one.

The tie was short-lived, however, as the Penguins answered with a goal less than two minutes later to give the Penguins the 2-1 advantage with 12:14 remaining  in the second period.

Toward the end of the third and final period, San Jose pulled Jones from the net and the Penguins scored on the empty net with 1:02 remaining to clinch the win.
