NORFOLK, Va.- City of Norfolk Public Works sponsored Ruffner Academy's Safe Summer Rally Friday afternoon that stressed the importance of students being safe this summer in Norfolk.
Students were greeted with special guests that came to the rally to get students excited for summer break.
Some of the guests included NBA Referee Leroy Richardson, rap artist No Malice, and Norfolk Mayor-elect Kenny Alexander. Each of these guests gave the students some words of wisdom on why it's important to stay active during the summer in order to stay away from trouble.
Norfolk's Recreation, Parks and Open Space spoke to the students about free programs they can get involved in throughout the city that will keep them busy.
Sgt. A. Copeland of Norfolk Police Department also spoke to the students about opportunities to work with the police department through summer camps.
Booker T. Washington High School's marching band performed a few pieces and Maury High School cheerleaders came to get the crowd pumped up.
Norfolk State University also had members of its National Pan-Hellenic Council join the fun. The Gamma Nu Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated and the Epsilon Zeta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated did a performance that got the students out their seats for a good time.
Ruffner Academy and City of Norfolk Public Works want to remind students to "Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible" during their summer break.
