Family of five displaced by house fire in Norfolk

Posted

NORFOLK, Va. – An accidental kitchen fire caused heavy damage to a Norfolk home on Wednesday morning.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue units responded to the fire in the 6400 block of Dove Street at 9:48 a.m. to find smoking coming from the front of the home.

Firefighters entered the home to find a well-involved kitchen fire. Crews were able to contain the fire to the kitchen area and extinguish it quickly.

Crews also opened walls and the ceiling to check for extension. The fire was deemed under control at 10:01 a.m.

One of the residents, an adult female, smelled smoke, evacuated and dialed 911. She was the only person home when the fire started. The home did have a smoke alarm, but the smoke alarm did not alert the resident.

Due to the fire and smoke damage, the home is uninhabitable at this time. Virginia Dominion Power was requested to shut-off the electrical service to the residence.

Red Cross will be supporting two adults and three children who were displaced by the fire.

No one was injured.
