YORK COUNTY, Va. - The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office says they are increasing patrols in the Yorkshire Downs neighborhood after getting numerous reports this month for car break-ins.

At least one report was as recent as this week. Some residents are reporting break-ins, while others say their cars have been opened and rummaged through, according to Lieutenant Dennis Ivey Jr.

He says there have been other reports in the Tabb community as well.

The common trend is "car hopping," where thieves will just walk from one car door to the next to see if any of the doors are unlocked.

"It's scary," says Kathi Stevens. "It's very, very disconcerting."

Stevens says it has happened to neighbors on her street in the Yorkshire Downs neighborhood and a visitor who was staying at her home.

"You're surrounded by military and you can't even be in your own neighborhood when people are breaking in during the day, at night, whatever," she says.

The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office is urging everyone to lock their car doors and make sure all valuables are either hidden or removed from the car completely, no matter how quiet or safe a neighborhood seems.

They are also asking anyone who sees anything suspicious to call their office at (757)-890-3630.
