CHESAPEAKE, Va. - The Gilmerton Bridge on South Military Highway is back open to traffic, earlier than expected.
The bridge became stuck in the open position Tuesday morning, due to a counterweight being out of alignment and jammed against the bridge. Officials originally said the bridge would be closed for several days.
Chesapeake city officials say crews have repaired the damaged auxiliary weight and have completed a temporary fix.
Bridge lifts are scheduled for midnight and 5 a.m. Thursday morning, June 30. Following those two lifts, the bridge will operate on a modified lift schedule with lifts only at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily until further notice.
Because crews will have to do manual bridge lifts, the bridge will lift slower than usual.
Final repairs will be made once replacement parts are fabricated.
