VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Someone destroyed mailboxes on Lynbrook Landing, according to police dispatch.
Police got the call around 12:15 p.m. Monday.
Luis Perez has lived nearby for more than 30 years. He says about 70 mailboxes were broken into and some were gutted. "I was actually shocked," he said. "People know that it's a federal offense. Nobody messes with them."
He told News 3 it looked like someone used a crowbar. "To see the extent of damage that was there- that's what caught my attention more than anything else," said Perez. He reported what happened to police and is working to get in touch with federal authorities. Because of the holiday, that might not happen untilTuesday.
Neighbors are now worried about the potential for identify theft and want their mailboxes fixed soon. "It's not an easy patch job," said Perez.
