NORFOLK, Va. – The City of Norfolk is starting a new pilot program, opening recreation centers late at night on weekends.

It’s called Norfolk Nighthawks and is geared toward young adults, ages 18 to 25. Community centers in Huntersville and Berkley will be open from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. There will be basketball games, fitness classes, music, online gaming, snacks and drinks.

Police, staff from the Recreation, Parks and Open Space, as well as volunteers will help run and organize the program.

“We understand there are nonviolent alternatives,” said Mayor Alexander in a press release. “We are committed to provide those alternatives to our young people. With our private sector partners, with our non-profit partners, with the faith-based community as well as with our civic leaders. We are here together as a team, united for safe neighborhoods, safe communities and safe schools.”

The program starts July 15.
