VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – According to the Virginia Beach Correctional Center, one of the buildings experienced air conditioning outages 2-3 weeks ago.

The HVAC system is maintained by the City of Virginia Beach and when the city did a recent update it didn’t load correctly.

As a result, 14 air handlers shut down. The outages affected the C building which houses about 550 inmates.

It took about two days to resolve the issues, as the manufacturer of the system had to come in to make repairs.

Additional fans and ventilation were put into place during the outages and inmates have T-shirts and shorts as a cooler option in warmer temperatures.

According to the center, the temperature in the facility never fell to an unsafe level and there have been no outages since this incident.

The Department of Corrections requires the facility to keep the temperature lower than 85 degrees.
