VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Beach Fire Department is trying to boost the number of Volunteer Support Technicians in their ranks.

The department traces its roots to an all-volunteer department in 1906. While today its comprised of more than 400 career firefighters, they still actively use the services of volunteers.

The fire department says volunteer work can lead to an actual paid career and the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports volunteers have 27% higher odds of finding a job after being out of work than non-volunteers.

Volunteer Support Technicians augment career staff and provide assistance with on-scene firefighting, air, light and equipment support.
