To honor the classic ice cream flavor, on July 23 we celebrate National Vanilla Ice Cream Day.

It is said that Thomas Jefferson introduced this delightful flavor to the United States after discovering it while in France. Jefferson’s handwritten recipe from the 1780’s can be found at the Library of Congress and the ice cream it’s self is sold at Mt. Rushmore.

If a trip to South Dakota to get the original recipe does not fit into your plans, then another fun way to celebrate the holiday would be to make your own homemade version.

All you need is…

  • 1 (14 ounce) can Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • 2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Combine the sweetened condensed milk and the vanilla extract into bowl and then fold in the whipping cream. Pour the mix into a freezer container and freeze for 6 hours or until firm.
