Yes, Russian ships were displayed during a Democratic National Convention tribute to veterans. However, despite what you may have read on social media, it did not happen at this year’s DNC in Philadelphia.
The 2012 article from the Navy Times is going viral on social media. Apparently, people are ignoring the date at the top of the story.
Four years ago, a backdrop of naval vessels shown during the DNC in Charlotte included images of Russian warships, as the Navy Times originally reported.
Here’s an excerpt from the 2012 article:
“While retired Adm. John Nathman, a former commander of Fleet Forces Command, honored vets as America’s best, the ships from the Russian Federation Navy were arrayed like sentinels on the big screen above.”
DNC officials apologized for the mistake:
“This error should not distract from the words of Admiral Nathman and others who spoke to President Obama’s strong record on issues that impact those who have served our nation.”
According to the Navy Times, the 2012 article “was one of the most viewed stories on Military Times again on Friday.”
