VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Sand is being dug up and hauled out from the front of several ocean front homes in Sandbridge.

12 homes have been declared in a State of Emergency due to having too much sand piled up in front of their homes. Some of that sand piled up to the top of fences, blew into yards and pools and added up in front of doors and windows.

Virginia beach City Council declared 12 homes needed help during last month's meeting. Since then the homeowners have been able to get permits that allow them to remove the sand from the front of their properties. Of the 12 homes, 6 have completed the work and several more are in the process of doing so. Vacationers are noticing the excess sand even after the removal.

"Now that you're pointing out this is one of the houses affected it puts 2 and 2 together as to why there is all this sand there," said Mike Swinney as he stood in sand on the patio in front of his rental home.

Once the sand is removed it can either be laid flat on the beach near the water line, or placed at the base of an existing dune.
