Virginia Department of Health receives over $500k from CDC for Zika prevention

Tuesday, Senator Mark Warner announced that the Virginia Department of Health will receive $560,000 in additional funding from the CDC.

The money is set to support efforts to protect Virginian’s from the Zika virus and from the adverse health outcomes that can result from Zika infection.

The health outcomes include the serious birth defect, microcephaly.

The funds will serve as a stopgap measure to help Virginia and other vulnerable areas respond to the public health threat.

As of July 28, the VDH has reported 50 cases of the Zika virus in the Commonwealth.

Virginia is one of the 40 states receiving assistance from the CDC.
